Welcome to Broken Open

As a writer, retreat leader, teacher, priest and soul coach, I delight in sharing with others how we can be broken open by life into an expansive love and an unshakeable joy, even in the midst of great suffering.

My offerings combine spiritual guidance and intuitive healing in the beautiful work of reconnecting you with your deepest, truest self.

A life grounded in peace and joy is always available to us—regardless of our external circumstances. In the midst of the chaos, cruelty and profound challenges of this time, it has never been more important to dig deep into the heart of wisdom to center and strengthen us.

Life provides ample opportunities for powerful spiritual growth and expansion, and I have found the spiritual path of the mystics essential in my own healing journey through suffering and pain.

Broken Open contains several sections, best seen on a browser or via these links:

  • Home: All posts—I’ve decided to offer everything in my Substack for free, so it is available to all people. I’m grateful to those who feel moved to support my work financially, but I don’t want that to be a barrier.

  • Circle Gatherings: Occasionally, I host Live Circle gatherings with a brief reflection drawing upon mystics and poets and a spiritual practice. We form a circle of trust, sharing questions and insights, exploring how this wisdom connects with our own lives.

  • Soul Coaching: Having a guide walking with us allows us to glimpse what we are too close to our own lives to see. It is my deep joy to witness and midwife others on the spiritual journey.

  • Upcoming Events: Retreats, classes and other events are highlighted here in this section and regularly updated.

A bit about my own journey with suffering, the mystic path and joy

My dad’s death by suicide when I was twelve forced me to ask big questions at a young age. As I embraced my faith and my healing journey, I discovered I had a gift for helping others make sense of their own struggles. I became a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1998.

Early 2018 began a season of profound loss and suffering. Residual complications from a traumatic brain injury led to my resignation from active ministry and learning to live with a disability. But nothing compared to the tragic death of our beloved 18-year-old child, Bee (she/her/they/them), by suicide in 2021 following a year of living hell. In and through these months, my worst nightmare had become my reality.

I let go of everything but Love. I surrendered to life just as it was. I anchored my breaking heart in gratitude and nourished my aching soul with community, silence and the mystics. Rather than break, I broke open into a greater expansion of love. I discovered an unexpected joy, rising from my depths, that was large enough to sustain me, even in the worst external circumstances I could possibly have imagined. Love, gratitude, joy and peace held me even in my grief. I do miss Bee’s physical presence always, but I discovered Bee’s eternal presence with me in powerful and life-giving ways.

As I’ve shared what is emerging from within my story and Bee’s, I am touched by the impact it has on others and how their stories impact me. I’m grateful for the tapestry of wisdom we weave together in this lifetime. Thank you for being part of this wondrous journey. It is truly a gift to have you here.

Here’s a video about why Broken Open and a bit about my story:

Below is a thank you for those who do choose to support my work financially, although I’ve now made everything available to all subscribers, I still wanted to share my gratitude.

Please know, wherever you find yourself on the journey, you are welcome here. I am honored by your presence just as you are. I delight in sharing this way with others who are also learning to trust this process with their lives.

Warmly,

Elizabeth

I find it rare to hear truly new things, new ways of understanding life - but Elizabeth absolutely gave us that. Her talks reminded me of Jan Richardson's work - honest, real, grace-filled. And, in the same vein of honest, deep theological reflection, Elizabeth reminds me of Barbara Brown Taylor, too. What she brought to all of us was an absolute gift that I will hold close for many years. I’m excited for others to encounter that gift. —Andy Blackman, Ring Lake Ranch Director

Biography

Elizabeth is forged by the Christ tradition, the mystic path and her own living communion with the Divine, drawn to walk the edges of what is known. Elizabeth’s embrace of all that is, including suffering and pain, with a radical, expansive love opens within her a spacious place of healing and wholeness. Her radiance is contagious, permeating her work as priest, spiritual guide and intuitive healer.

Throughout her life and career, Elizabeth Jameson has been committed to nurturing spiritual growth, fostering community, and saying ‘yes’ to love by putting Christ and Christ’s love at the center. Elizabeth has a Master of Divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and is a graduate of Harvard University. For nearly twenty years, Elizabeth’s active ministry included leading parishes as an Associate Rector or Rector and serving as Chief Operating Officer of an Episcopal Seminary.

In 2016-2018, Elizabeth participated in the Living School through the Center for Action and Contemplation, led by the faculty Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault and James Finley. She experienced her first Vision Quest in 2018 in the silence of the southern Colorado wilderness, returning to support others over the years. Engagement with nature, wisdom teachers, mystics, a commitment to spiritual practice and community are the grounding for her life and ministry.

Today, she lives in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado with her beloved husband, Jim, and precious black lab, Bailey. She is grateful for her son and bonus son, a large extended family and dear friends spread throughout the country. Delights include hiking in the mountains, traveling in their travel trailer and spending time with friends and family.
